A Busy Week Fighting to Fund our Schools!

This was a busy week! On Tuesday, I went to the PPS School Board Budget Hearing where I listened to so many heartfelt and frankly, desperate parents and teachers make their case against proposed budget cuts. I also gave testimony. People advocated for funding seismic upgrades, language interpretation access, and small classroom sizes.

The next day, Wednesday, I traveled to Salem with the Oregon PTA to ask lawmakers to fund our schools! 150+ of us had good conversations with nearly 30 lawmakers’ offices about the urgent need to allocate more funding to public schools in Oregon.

Yesterday, Thursday, I stood by for workers and teachers at two May Day rallies in downtown Portland.

Reflecting on the week, I’m so grateful for a number of reasons:

  1. I’m thankful for organizers (usually volunteers) like the Oregon PTA, Fund our Schools, the Portland Association of Teachers, and Safe Structures PDX who orchestrated incredible and successful events.

  2. I appreciate parents and teachers. I am truly humbled by your passion, the time you give, and your stories.

  3. I’m grateful for how much I learned! In particular, I have a new commitment to advocate for seismic upgrades.

Thank you for allowing me to participate, thank you for sharing your stories, and thank you for fighting for the right thing—to fund our schools!
